Is It Possible For Women To Grow A Beard Or Just A Moustache?

When you have attractions like The Bearded Lady reinforcing ideas about normality in women, is it any wonder that the onset of facial hair leaves many women upset and angry? Though, facial hair is quite normal for woman. The condition called hirsutism recognised as excessive growth of hair like a male but in females, is found in 17% of women and the condition has been described as “common” by many doctors. This means that some women will find it possible to grow a beard although many more will find that growing a moustache is easier.

A study undertaken in 2006 showed that on average, British women with facial hair spent 104 minutes each week managing their facial hair. The next time you stop and worry about how much time you spend on your beard and moustache, take that figure into consideration. In the same study, around two-thirds of respondents said that they regularly look at their facial hair in the mirror and 75% of respondents said that they touch it regularly.

How often do you touch it?

If these are the actions of women with facial hair, then men should take pride and confidence in how long they spend on their appearance. We are sure that more than 75% of men will admit to touching it regularly, but we’ll remain focused on beards, moustaches and facial hair for now.

Another study focused on the key issue for many women with facial hair though. 40% of respondents said that they were uncomfortable in social situations and three quarters of respondents said that they reported clinical levels of anxiety due to this hair and how it made them feel.

This is the key factor to remember. For women, facial hair is entirely normal but due to the way that society thinks and operates, women with facial hair are often embarrassed or feel anxious about their looks. This isn’t the case with men, which means that if you are looking to grow a beard or moustache, you should embrace it.

Feel confident in yourself because many people don’t

This isn’t about stereotypes, about manly men and feminine ways, it’s about who you are and feeling confident in yourself. If you feel that you look better with facial hair, then embrace this mood and make sure that you look and feel as great as you should. Many women would love to feel as confident as you with their appearance, and let’s be honest, so would some men.

As some women grow facial hair, many men find themselves unable to grow facial hair. All of which adds up to the fact that if you’re a man that wants to grow a beard or moustache, and you can do so, you should make the most of the opportunity.

At Beardspunk, we don’t believe in getting in people’s faces, which is slightly ironic given our product range. If you feel that a beard is right for you, care for it and nurture it because there are many people out there who can’t grow a beard who wish they can and there are also just as many who do have facial hair and wish they didn’t.
