Bearded Athletes - What Are Their Beard Grooming Rituals?

We reached out to our Bearded Brothers and asked for a couple of pointers, Jim Holborn’s top tip is: Twice per day.

“In the early days of growing a beard we all go through the stages of itchiness, looking scruffy (some say) and then the middle stage of I wish this would grow a bit quicker.

Now over 2 years of growing is behind me and its been a journey and a half, my life outside growing the beard is a busy one that has taken a lot of dedication, two training sessions a day 5 days a week and normally finishing the week off with a competition.

Turning up at competitions you get a lot of heads turning and looking, is it the great beard or is it the whispers of who is he and what is that!!

I compete in shot-put and discus for my local club as an individual and a team member and at the moment I am also 6 months into Team GBs Paralympic programme.

We hear a lot of suggestions on how to look after your beard and what’s best for it, I unlike some wash my beard daily due to my daily activity and make sure I oil at least twice a day, packing kit bags is a routine I’m now used to and almost do it with my eyes shut but the hard work comes with what oil, scrub, brush etc. will I be taking, but now that’s easy its BEARD SPUNK every time.

It’s great to sit on a night in a hotel over a cold drink with team members and other athletes from around the country and it is not long before the conversation turn to the beard, at some point there is always that one person wanting to feel the beard and many more asking about the scent.

Answer me this, how many times have you heard " I wish I could grow a beard like that " ?? My aim is to take my beard and myself to the highest point in my athletics career and Beard Spunk will be in the kit bag always.

Keep Calm and grow a beard!!!!”
